Goals of the outreach program at Jefferson Medical center is to promote health and wellness throughout the community, to extend health and wellness beyond the walls of the hospital and truly reach outward and to increase education and awareness of primary prevention and early detection of chronic disease and increase knowledge of self-management of health. Additionally, another goal is to increase screening rates for breast and lung cancers and to reduce weight gain among children and adults and promote healthy lifestyle and help the community participants be able to self-management of their health.
The VISTA will promote and design outreach materials and activities, serve to enhance and develop Freedoms Run race series-non-profit fundraisers (Harpers Ferry Half Marathon spring and Freedoms Run fall). Develop and assist with distribution plan of action. Plan, recruit and organize volunteers. Research potential grans, and serve grant writing. Research and develop a plan to successfully build 3 school tracks within the year. Research and develop an action plan to reduce weight gain among children. Serve and collaborate with community organizations such as the local non-profits and Two River Treads in Shepherdstown. Serve in marketing the new Physician Farmacy program in the community to newly accepted and established SNAP members and promote the fresh fruits and vegetables program of the local farms markets to individuals who might not necessarily afford it. Develop a plan to make the program accessible to children and students in the area.
